Market recovers some ground

THIS week’s wool market recovered some of the ground lost last week, with the Eastern Market Indicator finishing up 6 cents per kilogram at 1213c/kg clean.

The softer market last week might have contributed to the large withdrawal of wool from sales this week, with just over 47,000 of the 50,000 bales scheduled put under the hammer.

Demand was initially subdued, with the exception of that for 20 and 24-micron wools, before activity increased on the second day of sales.

Most Merino fleece wools then jumped 15-20c/kg, while 24-micron types climbed 30c/kg.

Finer lines from 17.5 to 23 microns generally moved 10-20c/kg in sellers’ favour.

The trend didn’t continue with skirtings, with only better style fine and superfine pieces managing to hold at last week’s levels. Other types drifted slightly.

A large crossbred selection gained a little ground, with oddments, especially some good, bulky, broader locks, following suit.
