Demand remains subdued prior to Easter recess

WOOL demand remained subdued this week, with the Eastern Market Indicator slipping a further 12 cents per kilogram to settle at 1212c/kg clean.

Just over 42,000 bales were put to auction and the softer tone caused the pass-in rate to jump to 12.3 per cent.

It was one of the smaller offerings of the season on the east coast.

Most wool types dipped by about 20c/kg at opening sales this week, with poorer quality wools more heavily impacted.

Wools of 22 and 23 microns, which were in shorter supply, managed to settle and even firm a little.

Finer wools were most affected at closing sales, losing 10-20c/kg, although it was at least encouraging the market appeared to hold steady toward the end of the week.

Conversely, skirtings moved into positive territory on the final day of sales after dipping at the start of the week.

Crossbred wools of 26 microns enjoyed a small rise of around 10c/kg, while other types tracked sideways.

Oddments continued to attract good competition and remained firm.

The national offering is set to jump next week prior to the Easter recess, with more than 53,000 bales rostered for sale.
