Finer wools hit, otherwise steady

FINER wools continued to come under pressure in the market this week.

The Eastern Market Indicator lost just 8 cents per kilogram for the week to come to rest at 1096c/kg clean.

Just under 40,000 bales were put under the hammer and while the pass-in rate dipped a little from last week, it still remained high at 16.5 per cent.

Fleece wools of 16.5 and 17 microns lost substantial ground, shedding 60-80c/kg. However, some ultrafine wool in Melbourne this week created some strong interest.

There was a low supply of 21.5 micron types and these and broader wools finished unchanged for the week.

It was encouraging to see some recovery in prices toward the end of the week, especially for 17.5 micron and finer wools, while the balance of the fleece wools appeared to find a level.

Skirtings have followed the fleece trend, with better styles more favourable and poorer types a little easier.

Crossbred wools also were unchanged, while oddments dipped 25-30c/kg.
