Market holds firm

THE first sale of the 2012-13 wool selling season this week produced limited quantity and selection.

A total 32,526 bales were put under the hammer, with the pass-in rate remaining at around 6 per cent.

The Eastern Market Indicator closed just 1 cent per kilogram higher at 1077c/kg clean.

With the Australian Dollar climbing more than 1 US cent to 102.61 US cents, it put the market up 16c/kg in US terms.

Most of the Merino fleece offering was 17-22 micron types, with a smaller selection of 23-24 micron wools.

Better style finer wools down from 17 microns remained in solid demand this week, posting gains of 15-20c/kg.

However, it was a different story for wools of 18-22 microns, with most of these types easing.

Wools with high midbreaks or co-efficient of variation of hauteur (CVH) were particularly hit.

There also were significant price differences between wools with low vegetable matter content and those with 2pc VM .

Merino skirtings continued to attract spirited competition, with finer types and better style and length lots fetching an extra 20-30c/kg.

Crossbred wools and oddments edged slightly lower despite dwindling volumes recently.
