Low offering, falling dollar boosts market

DWINDLING wool supplies leading into the winter season helped maintain solid market demand this week.

The national offering shrunk to 34,617 bales and the good competition meant just 4 per cent of the catalogue was passed-in.

The Eastern Market Indicator climbed 30 cents per kilogram to 1022c/kg clean, although with the Australian dollar drifting by more than 3.5c against the Greenback to below 99 US cents, the market was down 6c/kg in US terms.

Finer Merino fleece was the flavour of the week, with 17.5-19.5 micron wools gaining around 50c/kg and up to 60c/kg.

Wools of 20 microns and broader also continued their momentum, posting 40c/kg plus gains.

Merino skirtings were in short supply too and this ensured their steady rise of 20-40c/kg. Better types with good length and low vegetable matter attracted strong attention.

Crossbred wools didn’t quite maintain this strong form, but still finished ahead of the card by 10-30c/kg.

There was little change in the carding sector as well.
