Market keeps pace with surging dollar
THE wool market continued to keep pace with the raging Australian dollar this week.
Despite the dollar surging from 96.7 to 98.3 US cents and almost being at parity with the Greenback toward the end of the week, the Eastern Market Indicator posted its own gain of 18 cents per kilogram to reach 893c/kg clean.
In US terms, this put the market up 32c/kg.
A total 44,179 bales were put under the hammer and achieved a 93 per cent clearance.
Medium micron wools, particularly of 21-22 microns, were in strong demand, which was encouraging considering these types have been a little soft in recent weeks.
Fleece wools from 18 through to 23 microns all performed well and broader types recorded good price rises too.
Finer wools through to superfine types also maintained their good run since the start of the new selling season. Superfine wools are about 100c/kg above their levels at the beginning of the season.
Crossbred types attracted plenty of attention too and skirting prices increased as well, while oddments held steady.
Buyers for China were noticeably more aggressive this week, with healthy competition from Europe and India contributing to the solid sales.
The positive market mood is expected to continue in coming weeks.
The national offering for next week has been set at 40,715 bales.
