Market promising, with some nervousness ahead
THE wool market continued to soar this week, but there is now some nervousness over a possible price correction around the corner.
The Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) jumped 41 cents per kilogram to reach 990c/kg clean, the highest level so far this season.
The Aussie dollar leapt to parity with the US dollar again this week, surging from 97.5 to 100.5 US cents. This put the EMI higher in US dollars than the Australian currency.
A total 51,522 bales were put under the hammer and only 5 per cent of the offering was passed-in.
Chinese buying continued to be healthy and India and Europe competed strongly this week to support the renewed interest from European buyers.
Fine wool prices took a big jump again, rising 5-10pc. Some finer types gained 100c/kg.
Medium and broad fleece wools posted gains of around 5pc as well, while crossbred wools performed the best at the finer end.
Demand for skirtings kept on pace with recent weeks, however oddments did not follow the trend of the fleece wools and skirtings.
The mood of the trade remains positive, however there is some anticipation of a price correction soon.
Quantities of wool available are expected to increase as growers look to capitalise on the improved market.
A total 51,235 bales has been scheduled for auction nationally next week.
