Fine wool offering kicks prices
IT was another good week for the wool market, highlighted by strong demand for finer wools at the final Newcastle sale of the season.
The Eastern Market Indicator climbed to another highest ever level of 1307 cents per kilogram clean, rising 21c/kg compared with last week.
It was a similar story in the US currency, notching a record high 1328c/kg US after a 32c/kg jump.
This was despite the Australian dollar edging upwards against the Greenback again from 100.8 to 101.6 US cents.
Close to 45,000 bales was put under the hammer this week, with just 4 per cent of the offering passed-in.
The Newcastle sale strongly kicked prices for finer wools and they will likely ease with the return to selling in Sydney.
Wools of 17-16 microns and finer soared by around 100c/kg, while 18 micron types were up 87c/kg and 18.5 micron wools increased by 73c/kg.
Mid micron types performed well in Melbourne too, with 19.5-21 micron fleece wools gaining 30c/kg.
Merino skirtings in Newcastle followed the trend there, with 17 micron and finer types fetching up to an extra 100c/kg. Poorer types, however, were discounted.
Crossbred wools remained in favour as well to post 30-35c/kg increases, while locks and fine crutchings in Melbourne jumped by about 30c/kg.
Buying was status quo, with China dominating and Europe and India providing strong support.
Next week’s national offering is forecast to pass 50,000 bales nationally and the buoyant mood is expected to continue.
