Strong tone set to continue
THE eastern market indicator jumped 13 cents per kilogram this week to close at 754c/kg.
It is now 121c/kg higher than where the market closed prior to Christmas last year and has nearly reached the levels of September 2004.
A sudden drop in wool quantity combined with small sales rostered for coming weeks ensured keen demand this week.
Of the 56,691 bales offered, only 7.5 per cent was passed in. This is less than half of that recorded last week, where the market fell slightly.
Substantial price rises occurred in nearly all wool types apart from 24 micron and broader wools, which still recorded moderate rises.
Southern region
Merino fleece wools of 18-23 microns increased by about 20c/kg, while remaining microns rose by about 10c/kg.
Merino skirtings gained about 10c/kg for the week, with superior wools still receiving premium prices.
Crossbred fleece strengthened slightly and cardings fetched an extra 5-10c/kg.
Sales will be held over two days in all three centres next week, with a total of 67,000 bales rostered.
The market should remain very solid.
