Prices mostly steady
SALES commenced in Melbourne for the new wool selling season this week following the annual mid-year recess.
Demand was steady, with the eastern market indicator (EMI) finishing at 742 cents per kilogram. This represented a rise of 1c/kg, which was an improvement on last week's Sydney sale, where the market dipped 3c/kg.
This was an encouraging result considering the strong Australian dollar against the US dollar.
Of the 53,913 bales offered in all three centres, only 10.8 per cent was passed in.
Most categories eased in Melbourne, with the exception of fine Merino fleece types, which strengthened slightly.
Southern region
All Merino fleece wools broader than 19 micron fell 5-20c/kg, with 23 micron wools most affected. Superfine wools strengthened, especially 17.5 micron and finer types.
Merino skirtings generally remained firm, while crossbred fleece wools eased about 5c/kg.
Carding wools also dipped slightly overall after a recovery from the first day's sales.
Sales will be held in all three centres again next week with a combined total of 50,625 bales on offer.
A similar market trend is anticipated. Significant surges in demand are not expected, however small offerings should help maintain current price levels.
