Wool shortage kicks market
THE eastern market indicator jumped 21 cents per kilogram this week to close at 947c/kg.
This was a very significant rise considering the solid Australian dollar. It appears the shortage of wool is becoming a strong concern.
Finer Merino wools were again the flavour of the week, with some fleece types fetching up to an extra 45c/kg.
Of the 54,445 bales offered, 6.8 per cent was passed in.
Southern region
All Merino fleece types were stronger, especially 19-micron wools, which gained up to an extra 40c/kg.
Skirtings were generally 20c/kg higher, while crossbred fleece wool remained solid overall. Some types were slightly weaker, while others were slightly firmer.
Cardings gained about 20c/kg for the week.
Sales will be held in Newcastle, Fremantle and Melbourne next week, with about 55,000 bales set to go under the hammer.
The market looks like it will gain some momentum, with the shortage of wool becoming increasingly important.
