Weekly Market Wrap
With Adrian Field, Melbourne

Steady trend continues
THE eastern indictor rose 2 cents per kilogram to close
at 792c/kg this week.
Most of the upward movement was for wool finer than 19 microns.
Wool broader than 22 microns struggled a little, while prices
for Merino pieces, bellies and oddments increased about 10c/kg.
Price distinction for finer and premium wools continues to
grow, which is very positive news for woolgrowers who rely
on these types for their main income.
The big news this week was the announcement that the AWH group,
which comprises Elders, Landmark and Arcadian, has decided
to run its own wool selling program, rather than selling and
transmitting through AWEX.
As the AWH group represents more than 60 per cent of the
wool volume offered for sale, this move will have a significant
effect on the revenue for AWEX, which has provided the service
for the past 10 years.
It is estimated that fees for this service represent more
than one-third of AWEX's annual $6 million revenue. Remaining
revenue comes from membership fees, administration of woolclassers
and fees for market reporting.
Meanwhile, next week's offering totals more than 73,000 bales
nationally.
There is growing interest in finer wools, so 19 micron and
finer types are expected to sell well and possibly strengthen.
Better styled wools will also continue to receive good demand,
with fewer lots becoming available due to increases in dust
and vegetable matter content.
Little change is forecast for remaining types as a result
of the slight rise in the Australian dollar and the increased
wool volumes rostered for sale heading into Easter.
