Weekly Market Wrap

Market contradicts predictions
THE first sale after the Easter recess produced some positive
results.
The eastern indicator defied all predictions to rise 11 cents
per kilogram to close at 779c/kg.
Most industry participants expected a weaker market considering
the lower demand prior to selling and the high wool volume
on offer.
Nearly all types enjoyed better demand except for the 24
micron category.
Better style 20 micron fleece wools were most sought-after
and fetched premium prices.
Most pieces, bellies and carding types were cheaper on the
first day of sales before recovering on Wednesday and Thursday.
This was a very encouraging sign and hopes are high for the
positive trend to continue in the months ahead.
General news
The biggest issue, which is still yet to be finalised, surrounds
Australian Wool Handlers’ (AWH’s) decision to
abandon AWEX and start selling and transmitting its own wools.
There is currently no decision on whether it will set up
its own selling centre or share facilities with AWEX facilities,
but an announcement is expected soon
Meanwhile, next week’s sales offering totals nearly
70,000 bales, which is substantially less than last week’s
91,000 bales.
The market is expected to follow a similar trend, with better
wools maintaining current price levels and possibly improving.
Poorer style wools will struggle considering there are currently
large amounts for sale. It’s the time of the year when
more seed, shive, burr and dust content are present and most
processors can only take so much in their blends.
