Momentum easing
THE market resumed on Wednesday this week with good price increases for all types.
Merino fleece of 18-23 microns gained 18-27 cents per kilogram, better skirtings increased 10-12c/kg, and oddments followed suit. Crossbred fleece achieved small gains.
The Eastern Market Indicator (EMI) increased 13c/kg on Wednesday to close at 1049c/kg.
The market remained reasonably firm on Thursday for the better types. The less stylish, low tensile strength 19-micron fleece types fell 10c/kg, while similar 21-micron fleece types were also easier.
Skirtings remained solid, as did locks and crutchings. The EMI closed at 1045c/kg on Thursday, 4c/kg below the season high set on the Wednesday.
There were just under 50,000 bales offered across Australia, with the national pass-in rate being 7.2 per cent.
The industry is unable to sell wool tops at a price to validate current greasy prices. Much of the recent market rise has largely been due to low supply levels. With this in mind, one would hope we do not see a shift to other fabrics should the market continue to increase.
A smaller offering of just over 41,000 bales will be available next week, with no sales in Western Australia.
Southern region
The market opened on Wednesday with all fleece types recording substantial gains.
The 18-20 and 23-24 micron fleece selection jumped 15-20c/kg. The 21 and 22-micron fleece range achieved increases of nearly 30c/kg.
Crossbreds were generally dearer, as were skirtings and cardings.
The better types remained firm on Thursday, with the less stylish, low newtons per kilotex wools becoming cheaper.
Crossbred fleece remained firm. Cardings received strong support and closed the week up to 15c/kg firmer for some types.
